About Capital City Chorus

Capital City Chorus is an all-women’s a cappella chorus based in Indianapolis, Indiana, singing music in the barbershop style. Chartered in 1956, CCC has been performing for local and international audiences ever since. We are an award-winning chorus with Sweet Adelines International, our parent organization, and we placed 10th in the world at the Sweet Adelines International Competition in 2012!

Our 50+ members hail from all over Indiana and Ohio and meet every Thursday evening to hone our craft, prepare for performances and competitions, and to fellowship together in harmony. Members and audiences grow in music education through our performances, world-renowned coaches, private voice lessons, and educational outreach. We are changing lives... one performance at a time!

While we cover many genres in our a cappella repertoire, from standards to contemporary pop, much of our music is performed in the barbershop style. Barbershop music as we know it today originated in the early 19th century. The men’s Barbershop Harmony Society was formed to preserve this art form in 1938, and the women’s Sweet Adelines International followed in 1945. In simple terms, barbershop harmony is made up of four voice parts: lead, tenor, baritone, and bass. The goal of barbershop singers is to match our notes so precisely that the physics of sound causes a fifth note to be heard, even though only four notes are being sung! This “ringing chord” or “overtone” is the thrill of every barbershopper. It is different from any other kind of choral singing in that it is uniquely challenging, satisfying, and a genuinely American musical art form. More about Barbershop style music.

Capital City is active in Indianapolis and surrounding communities. We offer a $1000 music scholarship to a female University of Indianapolis music major in her senior year, chosen according to U of I’s policies. CCC members also help coach girls’ quartets from Indianapolis Public Schools so they may compete in the Rising Star Contest, which is sponsored by Sweet Adelines International and allows girls under 25 to compete in quartets internationally. CCC and its members are also involved in the Central Indiana Youth Barbershop Chorus, the Young Singers Foundation, and Young Women in Harmony. In addition to our own annual shows and cabarets, we are involved in community performances such as the 500 Festival Memorial Day Service and singing the national anthem at professional sporting events.
